Thailand is renowned for its liberal attitude to many issues and one of the most significant is that of sexuality. The third gender known as katoey is respected just as much as anybody else. Katoey’s are perhaps better known as Ladyboys and one regular event hosted in Pattaya is The World Championship Ladyboy Water Volleyball Competition.
In Thailand there are many transgender and transsexual people, many of these people are called Katoey in Thai language although the term Ladyboy covers both pre and post op men.
Katoey is derived from a Khmer word that means different, and in Thailand Katoey’s are treated just the same as anybody else and are accepted into mainstream life to a large degree.
So when Pattaya decided to hold the The World Championship Ladyboy Water Volleyball Competition it was hardly a surprise.
The Ladyboy Water Volleyball Competition is now in its seventh year, and previous years has seen this event sell out completely each time. Last year it was held at the prestigious Arica Lodge, and a record amount of teams and competitors were in attendance.
Competed for fiercely, the competition is a fun day out for all involved, and it must be said extremely noisy. This year there will be eight teams involved and they all play one another in a round robin tournament.
The event is highly popular as it raises large amounts of money for charity, the three nominated charities this year are: The Pakse Medical Centre, The Pattaya Orphanage and The Glory Hut Foundation.
Some of the teams competing in 2017 were: The Golden Eagles, The Pink Panthers, The White Sharks, The Green Hornets and The Black Scorpions. With five members per team.
The event is almost a precursor of things to come in the evening, as there is some spectacular entertainment laid on after the competition. A DJ will be laying down some serious tunes and there will be presentations to the winners.
Cheques will also be presented to the charities nominated to their representatives and a buffet will be available to all.
The event is a serious competition, and if anybody has seen ladyboys competing against each other in beach volleyball then they will know how hotly they compete against each other. But the main point of the day is that competitors and spectators have a great deal of fun, and all in a good cause which can’t be bad.
